Description

Skillet Barbecue Beef Sandwiches are a quick and delicious meal featuring tender deli roast beef strips simmered in a flavorful barbecue sauce with caramelized onions, served piled high on sandwich buns. Perfect for a stress-free dinner ready in just 15 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale

Sauce and Beef Mixture

  • 1 small white onion (thinly sliced)
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 cup barbecue sauce
  • 1/3 cup chili sauce (such as Heinz)
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 3 tbsp packed brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 lb very thinly sliced deli roast beef (cut into strips)

To Serve

  • Sandwich buns (4 buns)

Instructions

  1. Sauté Onions: In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onion and sauté until they are tender and beginning to turn golden, about 5-7 minutes.
  2. Prepare Sauce: Add the barbecue sauce, chili sauce, lemon juice, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce to the skillet with the onions. Whisk them together until fully incorporated into a smooth sauce. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally, for about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Add Beef: Add the thinly sliced deli roast beef strips to the skillet. Gently toss the beef in the sauce to evenly coat all the strips and heat through, about 2-3 minutes. Avoid overcooking to keep the beef tender.
  4. Serve: Remove the skillet from heat. Pile the barbecue beef mixture high on sandwich buns and serve immediately while hot.

Notes

  • Use very thinly sliced deli roast beef or steak for tender, quick cooking.
  • If you prefer spicier sandwiches, add a dash of hot sauce or cayenne pepper to the sauce mixture.
  • The sandwich buns can be toasted lightly for extra texture and flavor.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days and reheated gently on the stovetop or microwave.
  • Feel free to add pickles or coleslaw as toppings for extra crunch and flavor contrast.
