Description

These Applebee's Chicken Wonton Tacos are a delicious copycat recipe featuring honey-garlic chicken sautéed to perfection, crisp homemade wonton shells, and a zesty coleslaw topping. Drizzled with sweet chili sauce and garnished with cilantro and sesame seeds, they make a flavorful appetizer or main dish with a delightful crunch and fresh flavors.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken Mixture

  • 2 chicken breasts, finely diced
  • 2 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp minced fresh ginger

Coleslaw

  • 1 (397g) bag coleslaw
  • 4 green onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp honey

Wonton Shells & Garnishes

  • 16 wonton wrappers
  • Cooking spray or olive/canola oil for brushing
  • Sweet chili sauce, to serve
  • Chopped cilantro, to serve
  • Sesame seeds, to serve

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prepare wonton shells: Preheat your oven to 375 F. Lightly spray or brush the wonton wrappers with cooking spray or oil, then drape them over the sides of a 9x13 baking dish. Bake for 8 minutes, watching closely to prevent burning. Remove from the oven and gently pull the shells apart while pliable to create spaces for filling. Bake for another 8 minutes until they become crisp and golden.
  2. Cook chicken mixture: In a large bowl, combine the finely diced chicken breasts with hoisin sauce, 1 tablespoon sesame oil, soy sauce, minced garlic, and minced ginger. Heat a large skillet over high heat and sauté the chicken mixture for 8 minutes, tossing frequently until the chicken is fully cooked and coated in the sauce.
  3. Make the coleslaw: In a separate large bowl, combine the bagged coleslaw with sliced green onions, 1 tablespoon sesame oil, rice vinegar, soy sauce, and honey. Toss well to evenly coat the slaw in the dressing.
  4. Assemble the tacos: Spoon the cooked chicken mixture into each crispy wonton shell. Top generously with the prepared coleslaw. Drizzle sweet chili sauce over each taco, then garnish with chopped cilantro and a sprinkle of sesame seeds for a fresh and flavorful finish.
  5. Serve and enjoy: Serve the chicken wonton tacos immediately while the shells are crisp, and enjoy this perfect blend of textures and flavors.

Notes

  • Be careful not to burn the wonton wrappers during baking; watch them closely especially the second bake.
  • You can substitute chicken breasts with chicken thighs for a juicier texture.
  • If you prefer a spicier kick, add some sriracha to the chicken or drizzle over the assembled tacos.
  • For a gluten-free option, use gluten-free soy sauce and substitute wonton wrappers with gluten-free wonton or tortilla chips.
  • These tacos are best enjoyed immediately to keep the wonton shells crispy.
